Project Overview
Beauty Crib is a beauty retail brand selling across Uganda, live at beautycrib.ug. The work covers the storefront end to end: how the catalogue is presented, how a product page earns a decision, and how checkout is configured for local currency, local payment methods and local delivery.
The visual direction is deliberately restrained, an editorial system built on a serif display face, generous whitespace and full-bleed photography, where the products supply the colour. In a category crowded with loud template storefronts, restraint is the differentiator.
The Challenge
Beauty e-commerce has a trust problem and a logistics problem at the same time. A customer has to believe the product is genuine, understand what it does for their specific skin or hair, and know what delivery will actually cost before they commit.
A generic storefront template answers none of those well. It presents a grid of images and hopes for the best.
- Product presentation has to carry credibility, not just show a photo
- Pricing and delivery in UGX must be unambiguous
- Catalogue needs to stay browsable as it grows
- Store must remain manageable by the owner, not only a developer
The Approach
I started with the catalogue rather than the homepage. Getting categories, product attributes and naming right first means every downstream decision (navigation, filtering, related products, search) has something coherent to work with.
From there the design system was set as a restrained neutral palette with a serif display face for headings, so the storefront reads closer to a magazine than a marketplace.
Design
The interface pairs a serif display face with a quiet neutral palette, generous whitespace and large editorial typography. Sections are numbered, product imagery is given room instead of being packed into dense grids, and interface chrome is kept quiet so nothing competes with the products.
A first-time buyer needs to believe four things: that products are authentic, that delivery reaches them, that they can pay the way they actually pay, and that someone will advise them. All four are stated plainly on the homepage rather than buried in a policies page.
Layouts were built to map cleanly onto WordPress editing tools, so the visual system survives contact with day-to-day content updates.
Development
The store is built on WordPress with WooCommerce handling the catalogue, cart and checkout, and Elementor used for page composition. Currency is configured for UGX, and checkout accepts the methods Ugandan customers actually use: MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money alongside Visa and Mastercard.
Delivery is structured around what can be promised honestly: same or next day within Kampala, countrywide by courier.
- WooCommerce catalogue, cart and checkout configuration
- UGX currency with MTN MoMo, Airtel Money and card payments
- Delivery zones for Kampala and countrywide courier
- Elementor page composition on a consistent design system
- Product data structured for filtering and search

Optimization
Product imagery is the heaviest thing an e-commerce page loads, so images are resized and converted to modern formats with sensible fallbacks, and offscreen media is loaded lazily. Product pages carry structured data so listings can appear correctly in search results.
- Responsive image pipeline with WebP output
- Lazy loading for offscreen catalogue imagery
- Product schema markup
- Clean URL structure for categories and products
Current Status
The store is live at beautycrib.ug with the skincare range open and further categories being added to the same standard. Verified commercial results will be published here once there is measured data to report.

Lessons
Restraint is harder to sell than decoration but it holds up longer. The neutral system also turned out to be a practical advantage: with no competing colour scheme, new product photography drops straight in without the design needing to be revisited.
