Project Overview

Lumi Guard Health brings solar lighting to rural Ugandan communities under the line “Transforming Lives Through Clean Energy & Innovative Health Solutions”. The lamps replace kerosene and candles, and the organisation frames lighting as a malaria-prevention measure as well as an energy one.

That dual identity is the whole design problem. The site has to make sense to someone evaluating a lamp, to a partner or funder assessing the mission, and to a visitor who has never encountered the idea that a light could be a health product.

02

The Challenge

A social enterprise sits awkwardly between two website conventions. Present it purely as a product and the mission looks like marketing gloss; present it purely as a cause and the product looks incidental. Both readings lose someone.

There is also a credibility problem specific to impact organisations. Claims about transforming lives are easy to write and cheap to make, so a visitor arrives with a reasonable amount of scepticism that the site has to answer with substance rather than adjectives.

  • Explain a product that is simultaneously energy and health
  • Serve customers, partners and funders on the same pages
  • Earn credibility rather than asserting it
  • Stay light for visitors on rural mobile connections
03

The Approach

I structured the homepage so the proposition lands before the mission language does: what the product is, who it reaches, and only then the broader framing. Specifics first, ambition second.

Credibility was handled structurally rather than rhetorically. A founder's story gives the organisation a face, the Sustainable Development Goals it aligns to are named explicitly, and a video sits near the top for visitors who would rather watch than read.

  • Proposition before mission language
  • A dedicated Founder's Story rather than an anonymous About page
  • SDG alignment stated plainly: goals 3, 7, 12 and 13
  • Video placed early for low-literacy and low-patience visitors alike
04

Design

The identity is green and lime, which is apt for the sector but risks looking generic, so the weight is carried by photography of the actual product in its actual context, showing people holding the lamps and panels, rather than by stock imagery or icons.

Targets and goals are set in large lime numerals against dark green, which gives the page its rhythm and keeps the eye moving down through the argument.

05

Development

A WordPress build with a blog the team publishes to themselves, a contact route reachable from every page, and a language selector in the header for future translation.

Repeated structures (goal cards, impact figures, blog entries) are patterns rather than hand-built sections, so the organisation can extend them without a developer.

  • WordPress build with a team-maintained blog
  • Reusable patterns for goals, figures and posts
  • Phone number and contact route persistent in the header
  • Header language selector ready for translated content

Optimization

Photography dominates the page weight on a site like this, so images were compressed and sized to their display dimensions, and the video loads on interaction rather than automatically.

Headings were kept semantic and page metadata written per page, which matters here because much of the audience arrives through search on terms like solar lighting and rural energy access rather than through the brand name.

08

Outcome

The organisation has a site that explains a genuinely unusual proposition without leaning on mission language to do the work.

The figures shown on the site are the organisation's own stated targets, notably energy access for 500,000 rural households by 2030, and are presented as goals rather than achievements. Verified traffic and conversion data will be published here only once measured.

Lessons

For impact organisations the instinct is to lead with the mission, but the mission is the least believable part of the page to a first-time visitor. Leading with the concrete product and letting the mission follow made the whole argument more persuasive, not less.
