Project Overview

A church website is mostly answering recurring practical questions: when services are, where to go, what is happening this week, how to get involved.

The decisive constraint was maintainability: updates would be made by volunteers with varying technical confidence, so the editing experience mattered as much as the visitor experience.

02

The Challenge

Community sites fail in a predictable way. They launch well and then go stale, because updating them is awkward enough that nobody does it. A site showing last year's events is worse than no site at all.

So the real problem to solve was not the design. It was making routine updates genuinely easy.

03

The Approach

Recurring information such as service times, events and announcements was given dedicated, structured content types rather than being embedded in page layouts. Updating an event becomes filling in fields, not editing a page.

The most frequently changed information was placed where it is easiest to find both for visitors and for editors.

  • Structured content types for events and announcements
  • Editing paths kept short and predictable
  • Service times surfaced prominently on every relevant page
04

Design

A warm, straightforward layout with clear sectioning. Priority given to the time-sensitive information at the top rather than to a large decorative header.

05

Development

WordPress build using structured content for anything recurring, with layouts that tolerate variable content length without breaking.

07

Optimization

Kept light so it loads quickly on mobile data, with clear page metadata and a sensible URL structure.

08

Outcome

The site's recurring information can be maintained by volunteers without developer involvement, which is the condition for it staying current.

Lessons

For community organisations, the editing experience is the project. A beautiful site nobody can update is a liability with a shelf life.
