Project Overview

A school website has a narrow and well-defined job. Prospective parents want to know what the school offers, whether it is the right fit, how admission works and how to reach someone. Current parents want news and dates. Everything else is secondary.

The project focused on making those paths short and the school's presentation consistent and credible.

02

The Challenge

Institutional websites tend to accumulate pages faster than they accumulate structure. The result is a site where the information a parent needs exists somewhere, but reaching it takes more patience than most visitors have.

The second challenge is device reality: in Uganda the overwhelming majority of parents will visit on a phone, frequently on a metered connection. A desktop-first layout scaled down does not serve them.

03

The Approach

I mapped the site around visitor intent rather than around the school's internal departments, because the two rarely match. Admissions, academics, school life and contact became the primary paths, with everything else arranged beneath them.

Mobile layouts were designed as their own thing rather than as a compressed desktop view.

  • Navigation organised by what visitors come for
  • Admissions and contact reachable from any page
  • Mobile layout designed deliberately, not derived
04

Design

The design keeps the school's identity forward while holding a clear typographic hierarchy, so long pages of academic information stay readable. Photography is given structured placements rather than being scattered as decoration.

05

Development

Built on WordPress so that staff can publish news, update dates and manage content without needing a developer for routine changes. Repeated structures (staff listings, news items, programme pages) were set up as consistent patterns.

  • WordPress build with staff-manageable content
  • Consistent patterns for repeated page types
  • Responsive layouts across phone, tablet and desktop

Optimization

Images were compressed and sized for their actual display dimensions, and the page structure kept semantic so search engines and screen readers both read it correctly. Page titles and descriptions were written per page rather than generated from a template.

08

Outcome

The school has a coherent online presence where admissions and contact information are consistently reachable. Verified performance and traffic figures will be published here once measured.

Lessons

Institutional sites benefit more from editing than from adding. The most useful early decision was agreeing what did not need a page at all.
